ESXi vSphere client error " You do not have permission to Login to server"

$

This post is for the administrators who are more familiar with managing ESX hosts and new to  ESXi hosts. There are many environment with lot of ESX hosts and  ESXi hosts are introduced to the environment  after the vSphere 5. only ESXi will be available post vSphere 5 and ESX is discontinued. So there are many administrators who are new to ESXi management. When you tried to connect to your ESXi host directly via vSphere client as like connecting to ESX server. You may face the error message " The vSphere client could not connect to "x.x.x.x". You don't have permission to login to the server"

Don't be panic and don't try to restart your management services as all administrators do when they are not able to connect to the host via vSphere client. This above error is because of the "ESXi Lockdown Mode is Enabled" in your ESXi host.

When ESXi Lockdown mode is enabled, it will not allow any other user other than vpxuser have authentication permission and no other users can perform operations against the host directly. Lockdown  Mode forces all operations on the host to be performed through vCenter server. Root user account can be used to login to DCUI when ESXi lockdown mode is enabled.

There are many virtual environment used to handle high secure data like military, air force or banking information. It is necessary to keep the environment more secure by following lot of security standards to keep the data more secure. VMware have the vSphere security hardening guideline to keep the virtual environment more secure to comply with the security policies. Manually checking each compliance item is bit time consumption task. To reduce the efforts of VMware admin, VMware released a tool called "VMware compliance checker for vSphere" which checks the security compliance of your ESX/ESXi hosts against the vSphere Hardening Guidelines.

It can be installed on even in desktop operating systems like XP,vista,2003 and 2008. Compliance checker will check the compliance upto 5 ESXi or ESX host concurrently and produce the compliance report for the host.

2. Double click on the installation file to start the installation and click on Next

3. Verify the installation location . if you want to change click on change and select  the  new location for the installation..click Next.

4. It requires the Java. Browse the location for the java and select create a desktop shortcut using this java executable. Click on Next

5. Click on Finish to complete the installation.

6. Now launch the VMware Compliance checker for vSphere. Enter the IP address/ host name of your vCenter server and credentials to connect to the vCenter server and click on Assess Compliance

7. It will take few minutes to assess the compliance of the first 5 hosts of the vCenter server because it can only access 5 hosts concurrently .

8. Once the Assessment is completed. It will automatically open the browser with the compliance results. I have three hosts in my vCenter server. So it pulls the compliance report for my 3 ESXi hosts and it reports the passed check with green tick mark and failed item with red cross mark.

9. If you want to access the results of most recent assessment . Click on View Most recent Results button. It will open up the browser with the most recent assessment results. The results are saved in C:/Documents and Settings/%userprofile/Local Settings/Application Data/VMware Compliance Checker for vSphere/results/ReportTemplate.html

Improving Transfer Rate of P2V and V2V Conversion in VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0

$

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0 is a free tool from VMware to easily perform P2V(Physical to virtual conversion) and V2V (Virtual to Virtual) conversions. Converter 5.0 is released with some new features like Incremental synchronization, Partition alignment ,etc. However , We have heard that the time taken to complete the migrations in Converter 5.0 is more as compared to migration completing time in VMware converter 4.X. It is noticed that the transfer rate of the conversion operations had become degraded when performing migrations using Converter 5.0. This post is to explain the procedure to improve the transfer rate of the migration when performing migrations using VMware vCenter converter  standalone 5.0.

In VMware vCenter converter 5.0, VMware uses a proprietary protocol called  NFC , to image to destination by encrypting (SSL) the data payload transfers. This additional encryption overhead causes degraded transfer performance. To improve the transfer rates, SSL encryption needs to be turned off in VMware vCenter Convereter standalone 5.0. SSL encryption can be turned off in  the configuration file called Converter-worker.xml

Procedure to Turn off SSL Encryption in VMware vCenter Converter standalone 5.0

1. Browse towards below location to edit  Converter-worker.xml file

C:\users\All Users\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone (Windows Vista,windows 7 & Windows 2008)

c:\documents and settings\all users\Application data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone (Windows XP,Windows 2003,Windows 2000)

2. Open the file called converter-worker.xml with Word pad or Notepad. Before editing, take a backup of the file.

3. Search for the keyword useSsl using find option (Ctrl+F)

4.Change the following XML entry from true to false to turn of the SSL encryption

<useSsl>true</useSsl>

to

<useSsl>false</useSsl>

5. Save to XML file and restart the service called "VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Worker" for the configuration changes to take effect.

Performance Comparison  Before and after Turning off the SSL encryption

Windows 8 virtual machine  was converted using Virtual to Virtual (V2V) method using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone  5.0 (Task id 3 & Job ID 3) with "SSL Encryption Turned ON" took 1 hour and 32 Minutes with Average transfer rate of 1.23 MB/s

Again the same Windows 8 virtual machine  was converted using Virtual to Virtual (V2V) method using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone  5.0 (Task ID 4 & Job ID 4) with "SSL Encryption Turned Off" took 1 hour and 3 Minutes with Average transfer rate of 1.92 MB/s

The V2V migration after SSL encryption turned off completed 30 minutes prior to the migration with SSL encryption turned on.. Turning off SSL encryption significantly improves the performance around 35 - 40 % of migration time in VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0.

As compared to ESX, ESXi is released to add more security to the hypervisor. As of vSphere 5.0, VMware Announced only the release of ESXi will be available and there won't be an ESX servers. With the release of vSphere 5.1, VMware introduced an added security enhancements for high security standards with access and auditing.

With the Previous Version of ESXi, you need to use root account to manage the ESXi host. But with the release of ESXi 5.1, There is no need to use root account to manage the ESXi host. Root account access is needed, when Lockdown mode is enabled. You need to login to ESXi shell using root account.Only root account can able to login to access physical console access of the ESXi host using DCUI. With vSphere 5.1, You can login to DCUI without need of root privileges. Just add the locally created user account of ESXi host to DCUI privileges or admin access. This eliminates the need of root account usage. With previous versions of ESXi host, You need to use su to execute the commands in ESXi shell but with vSphere 5.1, you can execute all permissions with the use of locally created user account with Administrative permission automatically get ssh and local DCUI access. Main use of the individual user account simplifies the auditing of the local logins and task performed by user.

Before adding the Local user account to DCUI permission, If you try to login to DCUI using the user account you will get the below error message

Adding ESXi Local User account to DCUI Access permission

1. Login to your ESXi host using vSphere Client

2.Click on the Configuration Tab

3. Select Advanced Settings under software section

4.Click on DCUI and add the Local user account under DCUI.Access settings

5. Click Ok.

6. Now you will be able to login to DCUI with Local user account "Mohammed" with DCUI permission.

Adding ESXi Local User account to Administrator Group

Locally created user account with Administrative permission automatically get ssh and local DCUI access no need to add the user account to DCUI access separately.

1. Login to your ESXi host using vSphere Client

2. Click on Permission Tab and Right-click on Blank space

3. Click Add permission

4. From the Assigned role drop-down, Select Administrator

5. Click Add and add the local User account which you want to provide with Administrator permission.

Most of you would have been asked by your auditors during your security audit of your environment. How to track the individual user login and actions performed by the user account in ESXi servers. It was not available in previous versions of vSphere. But with ESXi 5.x, You will be able to login to Shell access using Locally created user account. In previous versions, You have use Su to switch to execute all the commands at ESX or ESXi level but with latest versions you can login and execute all the commands using locally created account by adding them into administrator group. By that you can easily achieve user auditing and when was the last user login and what action was performed by the user during his login.

With this new feature, You will be able to easily provide the auditing information for ESXi logins to your auditor. You will be saved during your IT audit.

Let's take a step by step look to understand this feature.

1. Create a local user account in ESXi server by login to ESXI directly using vSphere Client

2. Add the user account into Administrator Group

3. Login to ESXi via SSH using the newly created user account called "Mohammed"

4. Execute the below commands with user "Mohammed" Login

This command to list the vSwitch connected to this ESXi host

      esxcli network vswitch standard list

This command to list the Number of CPU's and its details

       esxcli hardware cpu list

5. Now We will verify the  "/Var/log/shell.log" to audit the actions performed by user called "Mohammed"

It lists the login information and all the commands executed by the user called "Mohammed" and also logs information about all User logins and tasks performed by users.

external USB/eSATA drives and raw device mapping (RDM) volumes.
• Storage Area Network (SAN). Backup repository server must be connected into the SAN
fabric via hardware HBA or software iSCSI initiator, and the corresponding volumes must
be seen in the Microsoft Windows Disk Management snap-in.
• Network Attached Storage (NAS) able to represent itself as CIFS (SMB) share (direct
operation), or NFS share (must be mounted on a Linux backup repository server).

Procedure to Create Backup Repository

Open the Management Console, Click on Backup Infrastructure on the left side and Click on Add Repository

This post is to bring to your notice about the Cool features of Veeam Backup & Replication v7. Veeam Backup & Replication v7 takes Modern Data Protection to the next level with features and enhancements that disrupt today's market for data protection. Let's see the features which are available as part of version 7.

Enhanced support for VMware vCloud Director
Using the vCD API, Veeam will display the vCD infrastructure directly in Veeam Backup & Replication, backup all vApp metadata and attributes, restore vApps and VMs directly to vCD, and support restore of fast-provisioned VMs.Support for vCloud Director (vCD) goes deep with integrated
visibility of the vCD infrastructure in the backup console.

New Plug-in for the vSphere Web Client:
Monitor backups and backup infrastructure directly from vSphere, identify unprotected VMs, and simplify capacity planning.VMware vSphere Web Client plug-in Monitor your backup infrastructure directly from the vSphere Web Client, VMware’s next-generation administrative interface for vSphere. The new plug-in delivers at-a-glance and detailed views of job status and backup resources, and also simplifies
capacity planning and identification of unprotected VMs

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint
Offering instant visibility, advanced search capabilities, and quick recovery of individual items, v7 disrupts the backup and recovery market for SharePoint. Built-in e-discovery and agent-free recovery mean you don’t have to spend time, effort and money on expensive add-on tools for granular recovery of SharePoint items.

Virtual Lab for Hyper-V
SureBackup eliminates risk by automatically verifying the recoverability of backups, U-AIR (Universal Application-Item Recovery) enables quick, agent-free recovery of objects from any virtualized application, and On-Demand Sandbox creates isolated environments for testing, troubleshooting and training

Native tape support
v7 gives you more choices for archiving backups – disk, cloud and now tape. Support for virtual tape libraries (VTLs), tape libraries and standalone drives offers the flexibility you need to take advantage of the investment and policies you’ve already built around tape.

Self-service recovery of VMs and guest files
You can now restore VMs with enhanced 1-Click Restore, and powerful new delegation options let you safely put restore in the hands of business users, resulting in faster recovery times and decreased burden on IT staff.

Virtual Lab for replicas (VMware only)
With new SureReplica, you can automatically verify every restore point in every replica. You can also put your standby replicas and DR infrastructure resources to work with U-AIR and On-Demand Sandbox.

Built-in WAN Acceleration (it’s up to 50x faster than a standard file copy)
Getting a copy of your backup offsite can be hard. Tapes are often difficult to manage, bandwidth is expensive and general purpose WAN accelerators are not workload-optimized. v7 overcomes these obstacles with built-in WAN acceleration. With caching, variable-length deduplication and optimizations
for transferring Veeam backups across the WAN, it’s up to 50x faster than a standard file copy and easy to use—there are no agents to install and no network setup.

Backup from Storage Snapshots (VMware only)
With exclusive Veeam innovations, including the ability to leverage VMware Changed Block Tracking, you can create backups and replicas from SAN snapshots as often as you like and whenever you like, from several times a day to once every 5 minutes, even during business hours. The result is near-CDP that
doesn’t impact your production environment or running VMs. Supports HP StoreVirtual VSA, HP StoreVirtual and HP StoreServ storage products

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange
Support for Microsoft Exchange 2013 will be included in v7.

I have analyzed the vCenter log file vxpd.log and found the below error message "Unable to create SSO facade: vmodl.fault.SystemError"

Step to Resolve the vCenter Service Startup Issue

1. Login to vCenter server

2. Open the Hosts file in text editor from the location  C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

3.I have found my host file entry have commented out for both  ::1 and also 127.0.0.1 entry for Localhost

#127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

4. I have removed the hash # symbol  from the IPV4 entry and changed my host file entry similar to the below one and saved the host file.

127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Try  to ping local host and make sure you are getting a response of 127.0.0.1

5. After that, I tried to start my Virtual Center service. It started without any issue. Issue Got fixed.

I believe this will be useful for you. Thanks for Reading !!!
